The objective of the project called "Semantic Services:  Technological Infrastructure of Semantic Services for the Semantic   Web" was to build a network of distributed and interoperable semantic services with which to create more complex  services. These services are available in Semantic Web Services libraries and can be invoked by any other system (semantic portals, software agents, etc.).

The advances made with this project are set within following fields:

• Methodological and technical support for building Semantic Web Services. The architecture supporting the Semantic Services has been implemented through an ESB, which in turn provides support to the infrastructure required to deploy and invoke the Semantic Services.
• Interoperability y management of semantic portals through the ODESeW External Information Gateway module. This module is used to integrate heterogeneous information sources into semantic portals built with ODESeW. This technology has been used in the semantic portals associated with the following European projects: Knowledge Web, NeOn, OntoGrid, and X-Media.
• Development of an infrastructure within the ontology field. In this regard two issues are particularly relevant: the mappings established between ontologies and the mappings between ontologies and databases.

  • Concerning the first issue, we have created a WebODE mapping service for the visualization and edition of mappings.
  • Regarding the second, we  have, on the one hand,  the R2O language  for establishing mappings between ontologies and legacy databases and, on the other hand, the ODEMapster engine for executing the mappings so as to populate an ontology (batch processing) or to translate a query (on demand).
• Improvement of METHONTOLOGY, a methodology for developing ontologies, and its adaptation to the new services paradigm. This new paradigm tries to provide support to those collaborative aspects of the development of ontologies and their reutilization; it also facilitates the dynamic evolution of ontology networks in distributed environments. Thus, we have identified different scenarios and provided an initial definition of each scenario in order to collaboratively build ontology networks. Special emphasis is given to the reuse, reengineering, and merge of different life cycles, in accordance with the requirements of the engineering project based on ontologies.
  • Migration from the WebODE platform, a platform for developing and managing ontologies, to open sources. This includes WebODE OS, an extendable, scalable and free distributed platform. In addition, we have software that is independent of the platform (Linux and Windows) and of the database management (MySQL and Oracle). The end result is an interoperable system boasting the main ontology developing tools and the main ontology repositories. The interchange languages taken into account are those recommended by W3C, namely, RDF(S) and OWL. Finally, it must be added that we made an analysis by extracting linguistic schemas, which are the representations of the syntax-semantic characteristics of the sentence components; consequently, we have developed formalized rules as "schema-action" pairs.
  • Identification of (a) the classification structures for the Spanish language; (b) lexical-semantic patterns; and (c) metalinguistic objects that help extract the relation SUBCLASE-DE. To carry out this task, we use rules based on patterns that are taken from those identified for each lemma and their variants. These lexical syntactic patterns can be consulted in the NeOn project library of the multilingual lexical-syntactic patterns.
