ICPS Ontology Network

The ICPS ontology network has been built in the framework of the International Classification for Patient Safety Project (also known as ICPS). This project is carried out under the auspices of the World Alliance for Patient Safety of the World Health Organization (WHO). The Alliance encourages research activities with the aim of improve the patient safety.

In this context, the aim of the ICPS ontology network is to represent the knowledge related to incidents that occur to patients during hospital stays. For the time being, the representation has focused on falls and pressure ulcer incidents.

The ICPS ontology network is a central ontology (PatientSafetyIncident.owl) that links together a set of ontologies that describe concepts defined in the ICPS framework, and ontologies that represent additional domains related to patient safety incidents.

The ontologies modeling the concepts of the ICPS framework are: Patient Safety Incident, Outcomes, Organizational Outcomes, Patient Outcomes, Patient Characteristic, Contributing Factors / Hazards, Actions to Reduce Risk, Mitigating Factors, Detection, Ameliorating Actions and Incident Characteristic.

The rest of ontologies deal with the following domains: Countries, Person, Anatomy, Time, Place, Furniture, Medication, Building Structure, Hospital Equipment, Clothing y Activity.

It is worth noting that during the development of the ICPS ontology network we reused both existing ontologies and non-ontological resources, as well as ontology design patterns and.
