PlanetData

planetdataPlanetData is a network of Excellence whose aim is to establish a sustainable European community of researchers that supports organizations in exposing their data in new and useful ways, increasing the ability of organizations to effectively and efficiently make sense out of the enormous amounts of data continuously published online, including structured and unstructured data, data streams, (micro) blog posts, digital archives, eScience resources, public sector data sets, and the Linked Open Data Cloud.

Research concentrates on a number of key challenges that need to be addressed for the effective exposure of data in a usable form at large scale.  We will provide representations for stream-like data, and scalable techniques to integrate, publish, and access such data resources on the Web. We will define best practices for capturing the context in which data is produced and understood - including provenance, and its space, time, and social characteristics - as a means to increase the effectiveness of data processing and retrieval techniques. Techniques will be provided to assess the quality of data, record, preserve, and, where possible, improve it through repair techniques, during processing. Finally, in order to attract exposure of certain types of valuable data sets, it is necessary to take proper account of its owner's concerns to maintain a degree of access control and respect for privacy, while not hampering non-contentious use.

UPM's role in the project.

UPM participates in the work thread about dynamicity and data streams, exploring the main challenges associated with the dynamicity of large-scale data sources, with a special focus on data streams coming from periodic sources such as news feeds or from continuous sources such as sensor networks. In this sense, work will be conducted by UPM on annotating streaming data sources in order to facilitate the processing, mining, and fusion of such resources, and on modelling, integration and adaptation to unknown and changing data sources.
